Government responds to call to increase minimum wage

The minimum wage increases annually on January 1. In 2025, it has already been raised to 5 500 lei. The comment comes from government spokesman Daniel Voda, following the request of Moldovan trade unions and employers to raise the minimum wage to 6,000 lei, starting July 1, IPN reports.

Executive Spokesman Daniel Voda said that "the government supports the need for a continuous increase in people's incomes and is doing so in a responsible way towards the public budget."

"Over the last three years, the minimum wage has increased from 2 935 lei to 5 500 lei - an 87% increase, the highest in the country's history", Daniel Vodă emphasized.

The executive's spokesperson added that a similar situation was registered for the average wage, which increased from 9 116 lei in 2021 to 16 100 lei, forecast for 2025.

The demand for wage increases was formulated by the National Confederation of Trade Unions and the National Confederation of Employers of the Republic of Moldova in a joint letter addressed to Prime Minister Dorin Recean. The request is explained by the need to maintain the purchasing power of employees in the face of inflation and continuous price rises, as well as to contribute to the sustainability of the pension system.
