The corn yielded well this year, as last year, and farmers expect to gather over 1.5 million tonnes of grains, IPN reports.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov said that over 450,000 hectares are annually sowed with corn in Moldova. “Corn is a crop friendly to the soil as it does no make it dry. We at least twice a day eat or use something made from corn or grown with the help of corn,” he stated.
The minister added that half of the corn production is used in Moldova, while the other half is exported.
Director of the Phytotechnic Institute “Porumbeni” Pintilie Parvan told the journalists that the institution ultimately managed to break the impasse witnessed since the dismemberment of the USSR. “For the first time this year, we presented six corn hybrids created by us at an exhibition in Romania’s Ialomita. Our hybrids were among the best ten even if there were hybrids presented by researchers from all over the world there,” he stated.
According to Pintilie Parvan, the corn grains produced in Porumbeni are in demand in the country and abroad and are even exported.
