Moldova in 2023 stabilized its energy security, Artur Lorkowski

In 2023, the Republic of Moldova stabilized its energy security, both for gas and electricity supplies. This opens up new opportunities for reforms in the field. And the higher is the degree of security, the faster the Republic of Moldova comes closer to European integration. The statements were made after a joint meeting of members of the parliamentary commission for economy, budget and finance and the commission for environment, climate and green transition with the Director of the Energy Community Secretariat Artur Lorkowski, IPN reports.

In a press briefing, the chairman of the parliamentary commission for economy, budget and finance Radu Marian said that 2023 was an extremely important year in terms of energy. The Republic of Moldova managed to consolidate its energy independence and finally managed to break free from dependence on Russian gas. “We have also adopted a number of important laws on renewables in Parliament, which will allow us to popularize what renewables mean,” stated the MP.

Radu Marian noted that, following the adoption of legal provisions, a high-volume auction will be launched this year on the renewable energy segment, which will enable to substantially increase the share of renewables in the electricity needs of Moldova. “In 2024, we will focus on everything that energy efficiency means – to strengthen the Energy Efficiency Fund, to promote the cogeneration process. We must reduce the influence of the natural gas source and have more cogeneration, similar to the European countries. And, obviously, in 2024 in Parliament we will focus on adopting a law to ensure minimum stocks from petroleum products,” said Radu Marian.

Energy Community Secretariat Director Arthur Lorkowski said that they discussed the progress made last year. “In 2023, Moldova stabilized its energy security for supplies of both gas and electricity to the country. Today we have reaffirmed these efforts made in the Republic of Moldova for the purpose. The process of separating the electricity systems and the gas systems was very important. It was a process that limited the external impact on deliveries to the Republic of Moldova. And I’m very glad that the Energy Community Secretariat assisted Moldova in achieving these results,” noted the official.

According to him, reforms in the electricity market were also discussed. “Moldova was invited to join the European energy market. The fact that the Republic of Moldova joins this market has proven to be essential for energy security. European integration also requires clear action on climate change and renewable energy. We confirmed today the importance of agreeing a national plan in this regard,” said Arthur Lorkowski.
