More than one million people are out of the labor force, most of them retired

1088.6 thousand people aged 15 and over are out of the labor force, according to the results of the survey ,,Labor Force Survey" in the third quarter of 2024. The figure is down by 2.1% compared with the third quarter of 2023, IPN reports.

According to the NBS data, the inactive population rate is higher among women - 57.8%, compared to men - 42.2%, and the share of inactive people in rural areas was higher than the share of inactive people in urban areas - 61.3% and 38.7%, respectively.

The largest share of the inactive population - 43.3% - was accounted for by pensioners, almost half of whom were women. They are followed by pupils and students - 14% and people who already have a job abroad or plan to work abroad - 11%. Among other inactive persons, there are also people caring for family (homemakers) - 10.4%, compared to 12.2% in Q3 2023.

The statistics also show that the majority of young people aged 15-24 years - over 78% are out of the labor force, on the grounds that they participate in the education process.

Most often women aged 25-54 are not working due to family responsibilities - 51.6%. At the same time, for men in the same age group the main reason for inactive status is the fact that they have a job abroad or plan to go abroad for work - 44.6%.

The inactive population is dominated by people with a medium level of education - 52.0%, with the highest shares in the 55-64 age group, followed by the 25-54 and 15-24 age groups.

People with low educational attainment make up 34.6% of all inactive persons, with the highest shares in the 15-24 age group - around 65% for both sexes. Those with a higher level of education make up 13.3% of the total, with the highest shares in the 25-54 age group - 23% for women compared to 14.1% for men.
