11 cops suspended, probed in connection with Boboc death

Eleven policemen have been suspended and are now being probed as part of a criminal investigation started after Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca one month ago revealed video footage of police abuse in the early hours of 8 April 2009. Some of the probed policemen are being charged with abuse of authority and with kicking to death a young demonstrator, Valeriu Boboc, while others are quizzed as witnesses, Interior Minister Victor Catan told a press conference on Monday, Info-Prim Neo reports. Victor Catan said the Ministry of the Interior had requested the mayor's administration to provide the footage in question but it hadn't been done yet. “We will request it for the third time if needed”, said the minister. The minister promised that other details about the 11 suspended police officers would be provided at a separate news conference. “I promised to present the results of the investigation at this press conference, but I was told that there were some issues to be coordinated with the prosecution bodies, so we would not want to make any hasty statements that could jeopardize the investigation”, explained Victor Catan. It was earlier announced that two police officers were being probed in connection with Valeriu Boboc's death – ex-Chisinau police chief Iacob Gumenita, who is under house arrest, and a criminal police inspector, Ion Perju, who is currently remanded.
