€13 million budget boost for health care sector

Moldova received €13.6 million from the European Commission. This is the third installment of the financial support offered within the Assistance for Healthcare Sector Reform in Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. The total value of the European Commission grant is €46.6 million (for 2009-2012). €43.45 million is budgetary support and €3.15 million is technical assistance. So far, €39 million has been allotted in three installments. The information was presented on Friday, June 24, at a press conference by Minister of Health Andrei Usatai. According to the official, €3.5 million will be spent for the renovation of diagnostics equipment, while the rest of the money will be used for developing the primary care service, providing medical centers with the necessary drugs, repairing hospitals, increasing the number of people registered in the system of mandatory health insurance. Another €1.45 million will be allotted for the renovation of the Medical Education Center within the State University of Medicine and Pharmaceutics. The money will also be used for raises for doctors who will work in villages. The chief of the EU Delegation in Moldova, Dirk Schuebel, appreciated the overall progress in the reform of the healthcare system, but stressed there were still many things to work on. “The European Union wants the Moldovan Government to intensify its efforts in order to implement all the activities included in this plan”, the European official said. Dirk Schuebel added that the EU offered the money without any conditions. The sum won’t have to be reimbursed and international experts will only monitor if the money is spent appropriately. The first installments were of €12 and €13.4 million. Dirk Schuebel mentioned that the fourth and last installment could be disbursed by the end of the year.
