15 people lost their lives in fires so far this year

Since the beginning of 2024, 176 fires occurred across the country and 15 people perished in them. The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said that the people from rural areas, which are far from district centers, with a small number of inhabitants and who are at a distance of more than 16 km from rescue and fire units, are the most exposed to poisoning by fumes and fires. In particular, it goes to unemployed or retired men, who live alone and have an antisocial lifestyle, IPN reports.

The Inspectorate calls on the citizens to pay more attention to the elderly, the lonely and to those who suffer from acute chronic diseases or those with special needs. The people are urged to come to the aid of these persons, especially during the cold period of the year, when it is necessary to check the functionality of stoves, ventilation shafts so as to prevent fire outbreak and also the risk of poisoning by fumes.

In order to minimize fatal cases among the population due to fire or poisoning, owners are obliged to equip the dwelling space with autonomous optical-electronic smoke detectors and antifire equipment.
