1,600 patients with COVID-19 are at the hospital

About 1,600 persons with COVID-19 are now at national hospitals and 366 of them have serious forms of the disease, with 27 being put on a ventilator. About one third of the beds are free, but their distribution is non-uniform, the head of the Hospital Medical Assistance Policies Division Svetlana Lupu was quoted by IPN as saying in a news conference.

The number of hospitalized persons has decreased simultaneously with the decline in the number of new infections.

National Public Health Agency director Nicolae Furtună related that Moldova ranks seventh in the region with an incidence rate of 5,833 cases per 1 million people. The death rate is of 191 cases per 1 million people, while the fatality rate is of 3.3%, which is rather low.

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 by July 16 totaled over 20,000, 5,900 of which are active cases. As many as 666 persons succumbed to the disease. About 13,600 persons got cured.

Nicolae Furtună said the number of cases last week decreased and the tendency was good. The incidence rate for the last 14 days at the local level varies from 9 cases to over 200 per 100,000 people. Under 2,000 tests are done daily. The average age of the persons who died was 66 years. 99% of those who lost the battle with COVID-19 had by at least one disease.

The cases of import do not exceed 1% of all the cases. The average age of the infected persons is about 47 years. Approximately 59% of the infected persons are women. The average incubation period is five days.

According to Nicolae Furtună, the number of infected children is rather high. A number of 1,087 children and 177 pregnant women contracted the virus. Also, 2,845 healthcare workers were or are infected. Nearly 10,000 healthcare workers have been tested in total, with 516 of them being tested during the last seven days.
