31% of ICT sector employees are women

In the Republic of Moldova, women make up only 31% of the ICT sector workforce and 19% of digital specialists. Additionally, women tend to access lower-paid jobs, earning 33% less than men in the ICT sector. These figures were presented by UN Women Moldova in the context of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, IPN reports.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an opportunity to highlight the importance of equal access to education and digital opportunities.

"Did you know that the inclusion of women and marginalized groups in technology drives innovation and promotes gender equality? On the other hand, their exclusion comes at a high cost - low- and middle-income countries lose one trillion dollars annually in GDP due to women's lack of access to digital opportunities", notes UN Women Moldova.

The Ministry of Education and Research expresses appreciation and gratitude to all women and girls contributing to scientific progress and innovation. According to MEC data, in the Republic of Moldova, women represent approximately 50% of all employees in the research and development sector, meaning 1,823 out of a total of 3,526. Women are the majority in social sciences (63.5%), medical sciences (59.9%), and natural sciences (51.6%), but are underrepresented in engineering and technology sciences (24.1%) as well as in humanities and agricultural sciences (48.7% and 49.3%, respectively).

Regarding academic qualifications, women researchers hold 51% of doctoral degrees, while those with the title of Doctor Habilitat constitute 31.4% of the total.

"The involvement of women in research is supported through projects run by the National Agency for Research and Development, including programs such as 'Stimulating Excellence in Scientific Research' and 'Young Researchers,' which create valuable opportunities for professional development," notes the MEC.

In 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution establishing an international day dedicated to recognizing the important role of women and girls in science and technology.
