The Government allocated 2.2 million lei from its reserve fund for repairing 165 cells in 33 remand centers of police stations, Info-Prim Neo reports. Minister of the Interior Victor Catan said the repairs form part of the human rights action plan for 2009-2011. A number of missions of international organizations that deal with the protection of human rights and prevention of torture and inhuman treatment highlighted the poor conditions in Moldova’s prisons and remand centers. The Ministry of the Interior manages 38 remand centers, 11 of which do not work. Four centers were repaired and meet the international standards in the field.
