The International Labor Organization on April 28 celebrates the World Day for Safety and Health at Work that promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. It is an awareness-raising campaign intended to focus international attention on the magnitude of the problem and on how promoting and creating a safety and health culture can help reduce the number of work-related deaths and injuries, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the Office of the ILO National Coordinator in Moldova. According to ILO statistics, more than 2 million people become victims of accidents at works or get professional diseases yearly, which is about 6,000 cases a day. In most of the Central and Eastern European countries, 4% of the GDP goes to pay temporary incapacity benefits, sickness benefits, disability pensions, etc. The Labor Inspectorate in Moldova last year examined 1,082 cases of accidents at work, 339 of which resulted in death. The experts say that agriculture is the most dangerous sector of the economy. The psychosocial environment is another risk factor that can lead to occupational stress, alongside other labor constrains in a global economy. The impact of the economic crisis made the companies more vulnerable and affected the security of the employees. The ILO urges the member states to implement the international standards in the field. Ala Lipciu, ILO National Coordinator in Moldova, said that ILO provides training programs on the assessment of the risks at work both for employers and trade unions and for the Government, under the Decent Work Country Program. A technical assistance project financed by the European Commission was launched recently. It aims at facilitating the process of modernizing the workplace safety and health system, which is an objective in the European integration process.
