361 schools closed on Monday due to severe weather

A number of 361 primary and secondary schools and lyceums in Moldova didn’t welcome students on Monday, as the local public authorities decided to close them on the recommendation of the Ministry of Education and Research, IPN reports.

Out of these schools, 151 are located in the municipality of Chisinau, 35 – in the ATU Gagauzia, 27 - in Anenii Noi district, 26 – in Ștefan Vodă, 17 – in Taraclia – 17, 16 – in Cantemir, 13 – in Leova.

Another 20 schools had classes online. In five schools, the teaching process was mixt, both with physical presence and online, for the students who could not get to school by school transport.

The 361 schools are attended by over 150,000 students. A number of 3,866 children were engaged in online classes.

The Ministry of Education and Research said the local/municipal education divisions will decide when the make-up classes will be held in concert with the administration of the educational institutions.  

In Moldova there are 1,203 general educational institutions.

It snowed heavily all over Moldova and the high winds formed snowdrifts, blocking road sections. About 200 localities experienced power outages. A yellow and orange code warning for the period was issued. The State Weather Service extended the yellow code advisory for high winds until Monday noon.
