500 lei for taking part in Chernobyl accident clean-up

The persons who contributed to cleaning up the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the families of those who died as a result of this will receive by 500 lei by April 26, when it is commemorated the Chernobyl accident, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a communiqué, the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family says this money will be distributed from the national social support fund according to the lists compiled by the local public authorities. An estimated 2,300 persons will receive such lump sum payments. The participants in the Chernobyl accident clean-up now benefit from monthly and yearly allowances, pensions for losing the maintainer or for disability degree, concessions when paying the public utilities and purchasing drugs and other payments. They can also receive free treatment at spas located in Moldova and Ukraine. Under the law on the social protection of the persons who were affected by the Chernobyl disaster, these persons are paid monthly allowances of 338 lei instead of being supplied with food products and supplements that help eliminate the radionuclides from the body. They also benefit from indemnity for temporary work incapacity of 100% of the salary, regardless of the length of service, and from additional yearly paid leave of 14 calendar days. The Chernobyl disaster occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. It resulted in a severe release of radioactivity due to a power excursion that destroyed one of the site's reactors. Most fatalities from the accident were caused by radiation poisoning. Over 600,000 persons from different countries took part in the clean-up.
