650 euros for getting driver's license back
Officers of the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime caught a patentee from Calarasi town in the act of taking 650 euros from a person. The man owns an electrical appliances workshop in Calarasi, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the Center.
According to the quoted source, the detained man asked 650 euros from a person for helping a person get back his drivers' license that was confiscated by the Calarasi traffic police after he was involved in a road accident. The suspect assured his client that he has influence on the police officer who dealt with his case and can make him solve the case.
The money was transmitted inside the workshop, where officers of the Center installed a video camera. The man yielded up the banknotes and admitted to taking it as recompense. He is now held in the Center's remand unit.
The Center took legal action over influence peddling. Investigations will be conducted to establish the connection between the suspect and the mentioned police officer.
If found guilty, the culprit will be jailed for three to seven years or fined up to 60,000 lei.
Influence peddling is one of the most frequent corruption-related offenses. This year, the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime has discovered 27 cases of the kind.
