70 years of Soviet ultimatum for Bessarabia
Today, June 26, is 70 years since the Soviet Foreign Minister Veaceslav Molotov issued an ultimatum to the Romanian King Carol the Second, demanding the evacuation of his administration from Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina in 48 hours, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to History Lecturer Doctor Ion Tentiuc, this ultimatum is a direct consequence of the non-aggression pact between the Nazi and the Soviets, known as the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact.
He says King Carol summoned the Council of the Crown, an equivalent of the modern General Staff. Only 6 of the 21 members, including Nicolae Iorga and Bessarabia's Stefan Ciobanu, voted for military resistance against the Soviets.
Ion Tentiuc says that Romania sought Germany’s support, but Hitler told the Romanian Government it should accept the ultimatum.
