7.5 degrees quake can cause chlorine leakages within 150m

An earthquake measuring 7.5 degrees on the Richter scale can cause chlorine leakages at the Ialoveni water pumping station within an area of 150 meters. Specialists say that in order to avoid serious consequences, prompt action is needed to evacuate the people and deal with the leakages, Info-Prim Neo reports After a quake simulation on March 15, Sergiu Pislaru, deputy chairman of the Chisinau water supply service’s Emergencies Commission, said that if the chlorine reaches the atmosphere in large quantities, it has negative effects on the human bodies. Ialoveni district head Nicolae Andronachi said that the quake was simulated at institutions that need to react quickly, including the school and the water pumping station. “We organized this exercise in order to see how quickly the services become involved in the process of saving the population,” said Andronachi. Victor Lazaria, head of the Ialoveni Emergency Situations Division, said that training and simulation exercises are organized permanently. “They are aimed at establishing what new methods and equipment are needed to deal with an emergency,” he stated. The chlorine removal operation involved six persons who were dressed in special costumes. The aim of the exercise was to widen the experience of the employees and administration of the Ialoveni pumping station and of the engineers of the central dispatcher’s service of SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau”.
