80% of Moldova’s population is physically inactive

80% of the population of Moldova is physically inactive owing to such negative factors as the consumption of unhealthy food, the abuse of fats, the deficiency of vegetables, fruit and proteins, Minister of Health Andrei Usatyi said in a meeting held to sum up the results achieved by the Health Ministry in 2011, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the minister, 70% of the persons aged between 18 and 24 and between 45 and 54 are overweight and this leads to the appearance or development of chronic diseases. “This permanent ascending trend of morbidity is worrisome in Moldova. More than 5,000 new cases of diabetes are discovered every year and there are 15,800 persons who depend on insulin. The financial costs incurred to provide them with insulin are rather high,” said the minister. Earlier, the Government approved a law whereby the sale of food products with an increased content of nutrients, fats and salt will be banned near schools and kindergartens. Andrei Usatyi said then that the given products pose an increased risk for children and leads to a rise in the number of obese people and persons suffering from diabetes.
