88 detainees will never get out
Eighty-eight persons held in Moldova’s penitentiaries will never get out as they were given life. Ana Druta, head of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions’ Public Relations Division, has told Info-Prim Neo that the youngest of the prisoners is aged 21, while the oldest over 60.
According to the data of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions for September 1, 2001, 40% of the convicts doing life are aged between 30 and 40, 39% are aged between 21 and 30, while rest are aged between 40 and 60 years.
Ana Druta said 79 persons of the 88 were convicted of murder, seven persons of banditry, one person of rape and another one of violent actions of sexual character.
About 45% of the 88 persons were convicted for the first time, about 32% for the second time, while the rest for the third time and more.
Approximately 36% of the prisoners serving life sentences have secondary education, while the rest vocational education or incomplete secondary education. Two of them have higher education.
There are more than 6,000 detainees in Moldova’s penitentiaries at present.
