About 40% of deaths from cancer can be avoided, doctor

Approximately 40% of the cancer deaths can be avoided if the persons see a doctor on time, said the chief doctor of the Chisinau Public Health Center Luminita Suveica, quoted by IPN.

“For women who are older than 40, it is very important to have mammography,” Luminita Suveica stated in a roundtable meeting entitled “Epidemiological situation through malignant tumors in the settlements of Chisinau municipality”.

The doctor called on the population to have prophylactic checks at least once a year as cancer at the incipient phases can often be treated. Among the causes of cancer, the doctor enumerated the unhealthy food, unhealthy lifestyle and smoking.

Mihail Palanciuc, deputy chief doctor of the Chisinau Public Health Center, said mortality from cardiovascular diseases ranks first, while cancer mortality second. At the start of the 20th century, pneumonia and tuberculosis were the leading causes of death in Moldova.

In the roundtable meeting, doctors from Chisinau municipality discussed the role of family medicine in early detection of malignant tumors, the risk factors in Moldova and the procedures for monitoring, assessing and reporting on the implementation of the Cancer Control Program for 2016-2025.

In Moldova, about 48,000 people have been diagnosed with cancer and over 6,000 of these die annually.
