About 70 tonnes of obsolete chemistry supplies collected from Moldovan schools

Nearly 70 tonnes of obsolete and hazardous chemistry lab supplies were collected from schools across the country and then transported to Germany where they were destroyed, under a program financed by the National Environment Fund, Info-Prim Neo reports. Environment Minister Gheorghe Salaru told a news conference on Wednesday the project was initiated by the Ministry of Environment in 2010 and implemented together with the Ministry of Education, and the practical work was done by a German company. Salaru said that over the past 18 months more than 69 tonnes of chemicals and contaminated containers were collected from 918 schools. Recently, the last truck with the waste reached the destination. According to the Minister, the measure significantly reduced the negative impact of the chemicals on the health of children and teachers as well as on the environment. Martin Kemler, the representative of the German company, said the project was a success due to the cooperation between all the partners involved and the enthusiasm shown by specialists from the Ministry of Education, district and municipal education divisions, and school leaders in the organization and collection process. The budget of the program is 5 million lei.
