The academic community and civil society ask the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Ministry of the Interior to investigate all the illegal demolitions of buildings done this year. Ion Stefanita, director of the Agency for Monument Inspection and Restoration, who forms part of the initiative group “Chisinau’s Mail Carriers”, has told Info-Prim Neo that the subject was discussed in a meeting at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova on July 12. The participants decided to make a common approach to the two law enforcement bodies. In parallel, the Ministry of Education will propose including lessons about the restoration of monuments in the curriculum of the Faculties of Architecture. Another initiative concerns the creation of a monument restoration specialty at the mentioned faculties. “Emphasis should be laid on the education system because the people in our country do not realize the value of the monuments. Thus, the message must be conveyed in universities as well,” said Ion Stefanita. He also said that there should be institutions that would ensure the efficient administration of the cultural patrimony and would prevent the demolition of architectural monuments. “A moratorium must be imposed on the demolition of such buildings by Government Decision. The demolition authorizations issued by the Chisinau Architecture, Urbanism and Land Relations Division should be monitored more strictly. No institution of the local public administration has the right to issue an authorization for the demolition of a building included in the Register of Monuments as the Register was approved by Parliament, not a division,” said Ion Stefanita. Six monuments of local and national importance have been demolished in Chisinau so far this year. Since 1993 until present, there have been reported over 80 demolitions in the historical center of Chisinau and more than 155 illegal interventions in architectural monuments.
