Actions in recent years didn't lead to much progress in supporting Roma, official says
Roma people continue to suffer marginalization as the Government's Action Plan in their support for the period 2007-2010 didn't improve their situation too much, says Vera Petuhov, vice-director of the Interethnic Relations Bureau, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“While some actions were undertaken in this respect, the situation of the Roma population didn't change much. The Roma don't have access to education and to other services and suffer discrimination”, Vera Petuhov told a Cabinet meeting.
The official further noted that the Roma represented a unique ethnic group, facing unique challenges. The size of their population in Moldova, according to data from nongovernmental organizations, tops half a million people, which is in stark contrast with the 12,200 figure shown by the latest official census.
According to Vera Petuhov, a new governmental Action Plan to support Moldova's Roma has already been developed and is to be implemented during 2011-2015.
