Agriculture Ministry reiterates necessity of modern wholesale agricultural market

A modern wholesale agricultural market is needed in order to foster the agrifood markets of Moldova, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov has told Info-Prim Neo. The official said that many countries have special markets for agrifood products, to which the producers have free access. “The idea of creating a modern agricultural market is not new. The Government in 2010 adopted a decision to build the Chisinau Agrifood Center – the Agricultural Market. But the decision cannot be implemented because we cannot obtain a plot of 34 hectares that is located near the Agrarian University. The plot has lain fallow for 10 years,” said the minister. According to Vasile Bumacov, a place is needed where the keep large quantities of products. “The same place can include a kind of terminal, where the products will be sorted and packed and prepared for export. The products that cannot be sold or exported may be processed on the spot. There will also be a laboratory for examining the products’ quality,” said the minister. He is convinced that a well-outfitted agricultural market will enable to eliminate the primitive street trading. “Attempts have been made to allocate this land on which to built this market, but there are persons who block this initiative,” said Vasile Bumacov. “The Ministry will continue to make approaches to Parliament. The producers will also become involved. We want to see what is more powerful – the producers’ wish or the mafia in the country.”
