Ala Nemerenco: This pandemic wave will be “war of the unvaccinated ones”

The current COVID-19 pandemic wave will be “the war of the unvaccinated ones”, Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco stated in an event held to launch a campaign to mobilize and inform students and young people from the Republic about vaccination against COVID-19 entitled “Contribute, get vaccinated!”, IPN reports.

According to the minister, up to 98% of the patients with COVID-19 who were hospitalized in a serous state in Moldova haven’t been immunized. Moldova daily reports 7-14 deaths due to complications caused by SARS-CoV-2.

Ala Nemerenco said that her generation was 99% vaccinated against such diseases as tetanus, diphtheria, poliomyelitis against which vaccines existed at that moment. Currently, the children are 88-90% immunized against a higher number of infections. However, a part of the schools were closed, while some of the business entities cannot develop due to COVID-19. Vaccination can change this situation.

Ala Nemerenco called on the students to get a vaccine against COVID-19 and to encourage other people around to get immunized. “You can increase the number of vaccinated persona and can return to lectures,” was the minister’s message.

Minister of Education and Research Anatolie Topală called upon the students to more actively become involved in the efforts to persuade the population to get a vaccine against COVID-19 so as to swifter return to the ordinary activities.

Emil Cioban, rector of “N. Testemițanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, warned that no medical student can acquire the necessary knowledge by studying online. To be able to return to lecture halls, the number of immunized persons needs to grow. Some 96% of the teaching staff and 92% of their students have been immunized again COVID-19. Of the six students confirmed with SARS-CoV-2, five haven’t been immunized.

Attending the event, Stela Gheorghiță, programs coordinator at the WHO Country Office in Moldova, said that since the start of the pandemic, COVID-19 has killed as many people as the population of a country. By now, 23% of Moldova’s population has been immunized with two doses against COVID-19.
