Alexandru Spiridon and company qualify for Champions League last-16
The Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk, where Moldovan Alexandru Spiridon serves as assistant coach, qualified for the first time in history for the last-16 stage of the Champions League, having defeated Portugal's Braga on Wednesday and finishing first in a group which also consisted of England's Arsenal and Serbia's Partizan.
Shakhtar's rivals in the next stage will be determined in a draw on December 17.
Moldova also has representatives in the other European inter-club competition – Europa League. Vitalie Bordian, defender for the Ukrainian team Metalist Kharkov, will be playing in the last-16 stage.
Also in this phase of Europa League, a number of Moldovan footballers will be playing for Rubin Kazan: Ilie Cebanu and Alexandru Antoniuc, as well as former Moldova coaches Alexandr Matsiura and Ivan Daniliants.
The knock-out tournaments of the Champions League and Europa League will take place in 2011.
