Almost 40% of infections with COVID recorded in Chisinau

There are now three major hotbeds of infection with the novel coronavirus in Moldova. Almost 40% of the confirmed cases of infection were recorded in the municipality of Chisinau. Ștefan Vodă and Soroca districts are the other two hotbeds with 14% and, respectively, 12% of the cases, director of the National Public Health Agency Nicolae Furtună was quoted by IPN as saying in a press briefing on April 4.

There are also age groups that are more at risk. One fourth of all the infections with COVID-19 are in persons aged between 50 and 60. 29% of the cases affected persons older than 60. The elderly people are the most vulnerable ones as regards infection and consequences of infection. The children diagnosed with COVID-19 represent less than 3% of the cases of infection.

Nicolae Furtună said most of the cases of infection in Ștefan Vodă and Soroca are among employees of the healthcare system. A number of healthcare workers of the primary medical assistance institution in Carahasani village of Ștefan Vodă district contracted the virus. An infected person who returned from abroad contacted with a medical worker who, for his part, infected coworkers at the health center.

Eight cases of infection among medical staff were confirmed at the Psychiatry Hospital. The virus was brought from outside the institution and affected the medical personnel, not patients, as it happened at Municipal Hospital No. 1 in Chisinau, where a woman hid the fact that she contracted the virus and consequently infected two healthcare workers.

As many as 591 cases of infection with COVID-19 have been confirmed in Moldova so far. The novel coronavirus disease claimed ten lives, three of which in the Transnistrian region. The youngest victim was 27. The dead include two doctors.
