Amnesty International Moldova collects signatures in support of torture victims

Amnesty International Moldova, a local nongovernmental organization, part of the worldwide movement of volunteers for the protection of human rights, organized on Friday a campaign to collect signatures on the occasion of the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, marked annually on June 26 . The event place in front of the Organ Hall where passers-by were asked to sign petitions to the authorities of Moldova, Iran and Egypt. About 1000 persons have put their signatures, demanding justice for the victims of torture from these countries. The petitions addressed to Minister of Interior of the Republic of Moldova Gheorghe Papuc and General Prosecutor Valeriu Gurbulea are supporting the victims of torture in the aftermath of the April 7 events. 24 Iranian activists arrested after a peaceful demonstration in Tehran risk being tortured. In Egypt, 5 Chechen students are to be extradited to Moscow, where they could be illtreated as well, Inna Guleac, a spokesperson for Amnesty International Moldova, told Info-Prim Neo. The organisers have also distributed information leaflets. Similar campaigns took place in Cahul (June 20) and Balti ( June 24), and another one will be organized in Comrat (June 28). According to the Chisinau City Hall, after the protests on April 7, around 300 persons complained about the maltreatment they were subjected to in police headquarters and remand centers. Amnesty International has representative bodies in over 150 countries. Next Thursday Amnesty International Moldova will organize a march to the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior and General Prosecutor’s Office in order to hand over the signed petitions.
