An interim chairperson was appointed to the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ). This is magistrate Vladimir Timofti, and the decision was taken by the Supreme Council of Magistracy (CSM) at the meeting on November 4.
Asked by IPN, Valeria Plămădeală, spokesperson of the CSM, specified that the decision was adopted with the vote of seven members. As for the fact that the meeting was not announced in advance, the source said that this was an extraordinary one, as an item was also included on the agenda regarding the notification of the Prosecutor General's Office on the consent to start criminal prosecution, detention, forced bringing before the law enforcement authorities, searches, arrest and criminal prosecution of a judge, a notification accepted by the CSM.
Since 1990, Vladimir Timofti has served as judge at the Military Court of Kutaisi, and then at the Military Court of Chisinau, where he also held the position of Vice Chairperson between 2001-2003.
By the President’s decree of January 25, 2002, he was appointed as judge before reaching the age limit fixed by the law. Also, by Parliament decision of June 26, 2003, he was appointed as judge at the Supreme Court of Justice.
The position of CSJ chair remained vacant after Ion Druță was detained in early October. Ion Druță, who is currently under judicial control, is being prosecuted for illicit enrichment. A week ago, law enforcement officers seized real estate and motor vehicles worth 12.8 million lei.
