Anenii Noi traffic police head arrested for smuggling

The head of the Traffic Police Division of the Anenii Noi Police Commissariat, an inspector and three other people have been arrested on suspicion of smuggling goods valued at 100,000 lei, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a press statement of the Prosecutor General’s Office, an investigation into the smuggling of undeclared goods in high amounts through the Moldovan border had been started in February, but at that time the suspects weren’t known. On Sunday, July 31, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office and the Center for Fighting Economic Crimes and Corruption arrested a person who transported consumer goods – clothes, footwear and office supplies, smuggled into Moldova from Ukraine. The same day, four accomplices were arrested as well. During the arrest, the traffic police inspector who escorted the vehicle carrying the smuggled goods refused to comply with the CCCEC officer’s legal requests and tried to leave. He was arrested after the officer of CCCEC’s Operative Intervention Section fired 4 warning shots into the air. The goods found in the vehicle and in one suspect’s garage have been seized by the CCCEC. Their value is yet to be estimated. The prosecutors and CCCEC officers are going on with the prosecution and the investigation. The suspects will remain in custody.
