A 25-year-old man from Anenii Noi district was sentenced to 15 years in jail for strangling to death a man aged 82 in Chisinau's Botanica district in July last year, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a communique, the Prosecutor General's Office says the young man came to bring the old man the rent instead of his friend. The old man took the money and put it in a paper case where he had 900 euros. When the young man saw the money, he hit the old man and then strangled him. Afterward, he turned on the gas range, closed the windows and lit a candle to set the apartment on fire. However, the apartment did not caught fire as an intervention squad of Chisinau-GAZ called by the neighbors arrived immediately. The Botanica District Court ruled the young man will also pay 50,000 lei damages to the victim's wife and 10,000 lei for the funeral and will return the stolen money. The sentence can be appealed to a high court.
