Archangels Michael and Gabriel commemorated on Nov. 21
The Orthodox Christians following the Julian calendar celebrate Saint Archangels Michael and Gabriel on November 21.
Priest Pavel Borshevski, bishop of the Chisinau church “Saint Dumitru”, told Info-Prim Neo that this is the major feast in honor of the holy angels.
Michael is considered the leader of the heavenly host, “one of the chief princes”. He is a patron of soldiers, knights, policemen, paramedics and ambulance drivers, the priest said.
Michael in the Hebrew language means "Who is equal to God?" St. Michael has been depicted from earliest Christian times as a commander, who holds in his right hand a spear with which he attacks Lucifer, Satan, and in his left hand a green palm branch. At the top of the spear there is a linen ribbon with a red cross. Archangel Michael is especially considered to be the Guardian of the Orthodox Faith and a fighter against heresies.
Gabriel appears in the book of Daniel where he helped by explaining the prophet’s visions. Gabriel is probably best known as the angel of the Annunciation who appeared to Mary announcing that she would give birth to the Savior. He also announced John the Baptist’s birth to Zachariah. Gabriel means "Man of God" or "Might of God." St Gabriel is the patron saint of messengers, postal workers, radio workers and telecom workers.
