Arranged in straight line, files of Romanian Council for Archive Studying measure 24 km

If put in a straight line, the desecretized documents to which the Romanian Council for Archive Studying had access measure 24 kilometers, Moldovan historian Mihai Tasca told Info-Prim Neo. Recently, Tasca took part in a seminar themed “Democracy Versus Totalitarianism: lessons learned during 20 years” in Bucharest. The seminar was organized jointly by Soros Moldova and Soros Romania. According to Mihai Tasca, who is the secretary of the commission for studying the consequences of the totalitarian Communist regime in Moldova, said the access to files in our country is limited. “I know about 80 such cases, but they are much larger in number and it is hard to gain access to them,” the historian said. “Besides the presidential commission for analyzing the Communist dictatorship, the Romanian authorities set up an independent body that studies and keeps these documents – the Council for Security Archive Studying. We also need a special body that will study the Communist past. The security archives of historical and scientific interest, especially the documents about the human rights violations and crimes committed, should be transferred to an independent organization.” The historian said there are professionals in Moldova who can assume this responsibility. “Our specialists have studied the social resistance and totalitarianism for over 20 years. We have experience in the field, but need authorizations,” Mihai Tasca said. He also said that the totalitarianism in Moldova was more pronounced and aggressive than in Romania. “Our people suffered both from the actions of the local security and the Russian secretary. The Moldovans were deprived of many constitutional rights – to Romanian language, tradition, religion, studying of the national history, etc. In Romania, the dictatorship and totalitarianism manifested themselves in the lack of democracy,” Tasca said. Only the competent bodies can condemn the persons or regime, the secretary of the commission said. “We will submit the necessary reports to the Parliament, which can give instructions to the Prosecutor's Office.” An international conference centering on the Communist regime will take place in Chisinau on May 24 and 25. It will bring together experts from ten European countries.
