Association “For Family”: Children aborted in Moldova do not have a commemorative plaque

The public association “Pentru Familie” (“For Family”) failed in its intention to install a monument to aborted children in the courtyard of the Mother and Child Institute in Chisinau following a prohibition from the Ministry of Health.

The association’s head Vasile Filat, in a news conference at IPN, said that this monument would have served as a ‘funeral stone’ for the 6 million children who have been aborted on Moldova’s territory starting with the 1950s, when abortion was legalized.

Last October, the association “For Family” launched a project to sensitize the people to the consequences of abortion. There were given a number of public lessons, where the young people were told that each fifth woman who had an abortion can no longer have children and these women remain with psychological traumas for life. “The women who told me that they had an abortion said they see the unborn children in their dreams. This monument would have brought hope to women that they would be forgiven for what they did,” stated Vasile Filat.

The monument was to be unveiled in the courtyard of the Mother and Child Institute on June 1, but the Ministry of Health didn’t give its consent for the reason that the women have the right to decide how many children they should have.

The association’s jurist Irina Batin said that over 60,000 children are annually killed by abortion. During the public lessons staged by the association, more than 14,000 people said that they are for placing such a monument, while over 11,000 people said they will not resort to abortion and will not encourage it.

The association “For Family” called on the people not to resort to abortion, especially because most of the women who decided to have an abortion invoked the financial situation as a reason rather than dangers to their lives, a genetic disease or the result of a rape.

The association’s members and volunteers will continue to look for a place where to set up the monument. The next attempt will be made on October 15, when it is celebrated the International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.
