Authorities should step up measures to identify gas cylinders in dwellings, opinion

The authorities should step up the inspection measures to identify the dwellers who use gas cylinders and should toughen up the legislation concerning the use of such cylinders. The issue was developed in the talk show “Key issue” on NTV Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Chisinau councilor on behalf of the Party of Socialists Alexandr Odintsov said the state institutions earlier had broader powers as regards the control over the use of gas cylinders. Currently, the employees of the competent bodies can inspect business entities to see if they use gas cylinders only once a year and this is insufficient.

Head of the Architecture and Design Center Valeriu Lupașcu said a coordination council should be created to deal with such emergencies as the apartment blast that occurred on Moscovei Blvd in Chisinau. This should be able to take decisions swiftly in particular situations. “A coordination council should be constituted beforehand so that this takes decisions without delay. This should be provided in relevant regulations,” stated Valeriu Lupașcu.

Civic activist Vitalii Voznoi said the vehicles parked chaotically in the yards of apartment buildings remain a problem when an emergency situation occurs. If a fire had started on Moscovei Blvd, it would have been very problematic for firefighters to act owing to the large number of cars parked in yards. Attempts are made to solve the problem ”manually”.

Four people, including a four-year-old child, died in the October 6 Chisinau apartment building blast. Another four persons were hospitalized and one of these remains in the hospital in a serious state.
