Forty-nine years is the average age of the mayors elected in the June local elections. In municipalities and district centers, only six mayors are younger than 35, shows a research carried out by the Center for Continuous Electoral Training working under the Central Election Commission. Research author, anthropologist Ruslan Sochirca, analyzing the age of the newly elected mayors, ascertained that the voters sympathize with the symbol-representatives of conservatism and slow but stable changes, IPN reports.
According to the study, only one third of all the elected mayors are younger than 45 years. In district centers and municipalities, the mayors under 45 are two times higher in number than in the other settlements. It should be noted that the mayors of the biggest cities – Chisinau, Balti and Cahul – are younger than 40.
“We will take into account this data and voters’ attitude to the younger candidates when we work out the training programs of the Center for Continuous Electoral Training because we consider that the experience of the elder ones fused with the energy of the young people can generate spectacular results,” said the Center’s vice director Doina Bordeianu.
The Center for Continuous Electoral Training is a public institution that trains electoral functionaries.
