The depositors with the Banca de Economii born in 1961 or older, who submitted requests for indexation until 30 December 2008, may withdraw their first-stage indexed savings at any location of the bank starting March 4, Info-Prim Neo reports. At the first stage of the indexation, depositors get 1000 lei each at a ratio of 1 leu : 1 soviet ruble. The remaining sum on the deposit accounts will be indexed at a ratio of 1: 2.5, but only after all the depositors that held accounts in Sberbank (whose successor Banca de Economii is) have received the first indexed thousand rubles. The authorities announced that preparations for the second stage of indexation have already begun. After the Moldovan leu was introduced on 29 November 1993 and the prices were liberalized, the population’s savings decreased in value by over 1,000 times.
