The process of consolidating and enhancing the national banking sector is conducted at an accelerated pace. The measures imposed by the National Bank of Moldova concerning the reassessment of released loans generated an important growth in provisions at some banks and the consolidation of the level of capital. Such a conclusion derives from the third banking performance rating produced by the independent think tank “Expert-Grup”, IPN reports.

According to the experts, in general the banking sector is well capitalized and offers a consistent reserve of resources that can absorb eventual losses. However, even if the banks are solidly capitalized and have liquidity in excess following the constraints in the lending process, the banks incur opportunity costs that show the reduced development level of the national financial system and of the general intermediation mechanism.

The performance rating is topped by four banks of systemic importance, namely Moldova-Agroindbank, Mobiasbanca, Moldindconbank and Victoriabank. Most of the calculated indicators at these banks are within the limits allowed by the banking practice. These excel in terms of profitability and market indicators.

Expert-Grup reminds that special working regimes, intensive monitoring and early intervention, continue to be applied at Moldova-Agroindbank, Victoriabank and Moldindconbank due to the persistence of vulnerabilities related to shareholders or risky exposure owing also to the lower quality of assets.

BCR Chisinau, EuroCreditBank and Eximbank have the best capitalization in relation to the owned assets.

Victoriabank, Comertbank and Eximbank have the largest volume of liquidity, while FinComBank, EuroCreditBank and ProCredit Bank own assets of the highest quality.

Moldindconbank, Mobiasbanca and Moldova-Agroindbank have the highest return on capital, while Moldova-Agroindbank, Moldindconbank and Victoriabank have the highest market shares by assets.
