Batch of medical equipment and furniture donated to Pruncul Penitentiary

A batch of medical equipment, devices and furniture was donated to the penitentiary with the status of hospital No.16 – Pruncul. The donation was made hrough the CoE project “Strengthening the prison and probation reforms, provision of health care and treatment of patients in closed institutions in the Republic of Moldova,” IPN reports.

At the handover event, Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said that the donation of a batch of equipment is “an expression of solidarity, of our common commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, even in less easy conditions.” The minister noted that improving prison conditions, including by ensuring high-quality medical services for all persons in detention, is a priority for the Ministry of Justice.

Attending the event, CoE Deputy Secretary General Bjørn Berge stressed that “the excellent cooperation and partnership between the Council of Europe and the authorities of the Republic of Moldova undoubtedly generate beautiful results and help us to raise together the healthcare quality standards in prisons and thus to improve, in the long term, the health and well-being of prisoners”.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the donated equipment will contribute to providing high-quality medical assistance to all detainees who are transferred, if necessary, to the penitentiary with the status of hospital no. 16 – Pruncul.

The donation consists of patient monitors, electric operating tables, devices for performing electroencephalograms, examination lamps, portable ultrasound scanners and various medical furniture. The first batch of equipment was donated within the project in 2020, also by the CoE.
