BCC and Academy of Sciences focus on language mistakes on TV

The mistakes made by journalists will be penalized only when Parliament endorses such a legislative initiative, the chairman of the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) Marian Pocaznoi said following the presentation of the results of the monitoring of the language used by the TV channels in Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The legislation does not provide for punishment now. We will ask Parliament to amend the Broadcasting Code so that the Council could impose penalties. We will wait for the reaction of civil society and the people so that we could regulate these activities,” said Marian Pocaznoi. Vasile Bahnaru, head of the Academy of Sciences’ Philology Institute, criticized the work of the journalists, especially the young ones, saying they are not appropriately prepared. “The journalists must also focus on the correctness of the message they convey to the people. Until the 1990s, the journalists were better or worse, more ideologized or less idoelogized, but most of them were proficient. Solutions should be found to prepare these young persons,” he stated. The head of the Academy’s National Terminology Institute Inga Druta said that among the most often mistakes met on the TV channels with national coverage are the absence of diacritics, letters, and commas, the inconsistency of using them and the inappropriate translation from Russian. The monitoring covered the period between October and December 2011 and embraced 13 TV channels.
