BCC and SB members will be elected by vote of parliamentary majority
The candidates for member of the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) will be named by the Parliament decision. The members of the BCC and the Supervisory Board (SB) will be elected by the vote of the parliamentary majority. Earlier, they were elected by the vote of 3/5 of the MPs.
A relevant amendment to the Broadcasting Code was introduced by the MPs in first reading on Thursday, Info-Prim Neo reports. Corina Fusu, the chairwoman of the parliamentary commission for culture, education, youth and mass media, said that this decision will simplify the election of the members of the BCC and SB.
Fusu also said that in a decision passed on September 17, 2009, the European Court of Human Rights says that Moldova must take measures to modify the legislation that led to a conviction by the Court over violation of the freedom of expression.
“The EU-Moldova Plan of Action, the resolutions by the PACE and the Parliament of the EU say the right to free expression, the independence of the mass media and of the national public broadcaster Teleradio-Moldova must be observed,” Corina Fusu said.
Communist MP Grigore Petrenco asked if the amendment of the Broadcasting Code was coordinated with the Council of Europe. Fusu answered that this is not an essential modification as there was only removed a shortcoming.
Victor Stepaniuc, another Communist MP, recommended Corina Fusu to take into account that the parliamentary majority should not suppress the independence of these institutions. He also said that the amendment has political goals. Communist MP Eduard Musuc said it is not clear what they want to hide by this bill.
