A number of national road sections in Soroca, Drochia, Briceni, Edinet, Glodeni, Ocnita, Ungheni, and Floresti districts are snowed up as a result of the whiteout. Many persons remained blocked in bus and train stations in these districts, waiting for the units of transport, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure informed that the snowed up road sections include the M14 Brest-Briceni-Chisinau-Odessa road, not far from Berlinet village of Briceni district, 679th-681st km; Bratusenii Noi, Edinet, 685th-692nd km; R7 Soroca-Drochia-Costesti, 13th-15th km; Solcani and Bascani in Soroca district, 45th-60th km towards Rascani town, Rascani district. The roads R8 Otaci-Edinet, 40th-55th km, R11 Ocnita – Briceni, 5th-34th km, R15 Balti-Glodeni, 10th-15th km, R16 Balti-Falesti-Sculeni 20th-27th km, and R 20 Rezina-Orhei-Calarasi, 20th-29th km are also impassable. Snow cleanup operations were performed in the evening of December 16 to evacuate the blocked people and to tow the blocked units of transport. The works moved on slowly owing to the snowstorm. Transport Minister Anatol Salaru asked accommodating the persons blocked inside bus and train stations. According to the Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure, the layer of snow in northern Moldova is around 4 m and the visibility in traffic is reduced to 10 m. As many as 300 snowplows and 250 workers are cleaning the streets round the clock. The Civil Protection and Emergencies Service set up a hotline for the people in the northern districts, who experience difficulties: 0231 60 191, 0231 61 496. Those who remained blocked can also call 901. The national roads in central and southern Moldova are passable. Moldova’s Railways assures that the heavy snowfalls of the last several hours did not paralyze traffic and railroad transport. More than 5,000 employees of the company work to ensure the smooth running of the trains all over the country.
