Boxer Vasile Belous qualifies for Olympics
Vasile Belous has become the first Moldovan boxer to book a place at the 2012 Olympic Games after defeating Mark Basile of Australia, 18-9, in the eighth-finals of the ongoing World Boxing Championships in Baku, Info-Prim Neo reports.
In the quarter-finals on Wednesday, the 23-year-old boxer will duel Vikas Krishan of India, and if successful, Belous will secure at least one bronze medal at the Championships.
Another Moldovan boxer who was one step close to qualifying for the Olympics is this year's European champion Veaceslav Gojan, the leader of the national boxing team, who lost surprisingly to Orzubek Shaimov of Uzbekistan, 13-8.
Gojan however has one more chance to qualify if Shaimov reaches the final.
Moldova has been represented at the World Boxing Championships in Baku by 8 boxers. Most of them were eliminated after the first fights.
At the 2012 Olympics, Moldova will also represented by the athletes Ion Luchianov, Zalina Marghiev and Iaroslav Musinschii.
