Boxers start off on wrong foot

The Moldovan boxers got off on the wrong foot at the World Championship held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku. On the first contest day, Mihail Muntean (91kg class) lost to Uzbekistan’s Mirzohidjon Abdullaev 11-4 and was eliminated from the competition, Info-Prim Neo reports. Alexandru Rascan (52kg) enters the competition on September 27. He will face Michael Conan from Ireland. Rascan has won a bronze medal at the European Champs this year. The next days, Moldova will be represented by another six boxers: Victor Cotiujanschi (75kg class), Vladimir Cheles (81kg class), Vasile Belous (69kg class), Violin Berzoi (64kg class), Dumitru Galagot (60kg class), and Veaceslav Gojan (56kg class). Veaceslav Gojan won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games and a European title in 2011 and is considered to have the greatest changes of winning a medal in this competition. The World Championship 2011 brought together 570 boxers from 113 countries. The athletes fight for the first qualification points for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
