Cahul psychiatrist investigated for corruption

A Cahul psychiatrist has been identified as a suspect in a corruption scheme to issue permits for possession and carrying of weapons in violation of the law. This is not the doctorțs first offense. Last year, the doctor was found guilty of tampering with official records. The court imposed a criminal fine.

According to a National Anticorruption Center press release, since 2019, members of the Special Medical Commission for examining the mental capacities of applicants to own and use weapons and ammunition in Cahul allegedly extorted and received money from several people in order to obtain a positive opinion from the psychiatrist and speed up the subsequent issuance of certificates. The amounts extorted varied between 150 and 200 lei per case, and in many of these cases the Commission did not actually convene.

Between 2019 and 2020, an estimated 1 000+ licences were issued with violations, while only 115 cases respected proper procedure.

A criminal case for passive bribery has been initiated, which carries a penalty of 5 to 10 years of imprisonment, a fine of up to 8 000 conventional units and deprivation of the right to hold certain public offices for up to 10 years.
