The oncological diseases are the second leading cause of death in Moldova. In 2019, the incidence of cancer was of 285.2 cases per 100,000 people, affecting 10,112 persons. The figure was higher than in 2018, when there were 10,021 persons with cancer. The data were presented by the National Public Health Agency in connection with World Cancer Day that is annually marked on February 4, IPN reports.
The Agency noted that the epidemiological situation through cancer in Moldova is unfavorable. In 2012-2019, cancer mortality rose from 163.2 cases per 100,000 people in 2012 to 173.0 cases per 100,000 people in 2018-2019.
In 2019, cancer killed 6,132 people. The death rate among men is 1.5 times higher than among women.
Cancer annually causes over 19.6 million deaths globally. Experts estimate that the deaths because of cancer until 2030 will exceed 13 million a year. This is more than the deaths caused by HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis together.
