Moldovan National Bank governor Dorin Dragutanu says the slight depreciation of the national currency in the last couple of days, by 2 bani, is not a reason to fear another steep decline in the leu's value. He told a broadcast on Radio Moldova that, while the central bank was expecting an appreciation of the leu against the euro and dollar in the beginning of June, it eventually occurred in June-July, IPN reports.
“Those who bought euros in late June and early July at a rate of 19.30 lei can now see that they have already lost nearly 5% in those transactions. I warned that many would regret it”, said Dorin Dragutanu.
The governor said the National Bank was not intervening in this period into the currency market. “We haven't sold foreign currency since July. What we can see now, the oscillations in the last few days, indicate that the currency rate is trying to find a state of balance. It did jump pretty strong, hitting record highs, but in the last 6 weeks we can see a rather calm situation on the currency market”.
