Chapel of Ohanovich family in Catholic Cemetery to be restored

The chapel of the Ohanovich family in the Catholic Cemetery, which was built in the 1913 and got ruined in time, will be restored. The works will be carried out within the project signed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland, the Chisinau City Hall and the Embassy of Poland in Moldova three years ago, IPN reports.

The Polish architects for the third consecutive year come to Chisinau to restore the monuments of Poles situated in the Catholic Cemetery.

In an event held to launch the works to renovate the chapel and a funeral stone on August 7, Jerzy Stankiewicz, charge d’affaires of the Embassy of Poland in Moldova, said the funeral stone was chosen for restoration owing to its artistic originality. The chapel is a historical monument located above the graves of the Ohanovich family, which consisted of landowners. The family also owned the Mandac Complex in northern Moldova. “The chapel is in a state of ruin and can be saved only by the effort of specialists. The funeral stone is unique and cannot be found elsewhere,” stated Jerzy Stankiewicz.

Ludmila Botan, director of the municipal enterprise “Funeral Services Complex,” said the Catholic Cemetery consists of over 3,000 graves, almost half of which are of Poles. The project is aimed at rehabilitating more monuments of the cemetery. Three funeral stones had been restored during the last few years.
