Chisinau Mayor: Number of those chased by police exceeds 1,000

The Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca condemns the acts of violence against the people following the April 7 events. He describes the repressive acts as unprecedented cruelty, terror, violence and intimidation. The mayor does not rule out that there could be other cases of death, besides the death of Valeriu Boboc and Ion Tibuleac who allegedly died after beaten by the police, but these cases are hushed up, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The police continue to abusively arrest persons from the street, high schools, universities and hostels. The law is not observed. Those arrested are brutally beaten and subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment and torture,” Dorin Chirtoaca said. According to him, those arrested are held without water and food for more than 48 hours and do not have access to medical services. According to the Interior Ministry, 172 persons were arrested and sanctioned after the protests. But the Chisinau City Hall says that according to the information provided by the relatives of those that went missing and of the released persons, at least 328 persons were detained. “We estimate that the number of those that are chased by the police exceeds 1,000. In order to hush up the maltreatment cases, those arrested were taken to commissariats and penitentiaries outside Chisinau,” the mayor said, adding that four persons are now still missing. He expressed his regret at the fact that representatives of international institutions, human rights organizations and the press were denied access to the detention places and voiced concern over the fact that no special missions were created or sent to examine the situation on the spot.
