Chisinau minibus drivers defy Mayor's safety rules
Passenger minibus drivers in Chisinau continue to ignore the safety rules requested by Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, such as not to carry passengers standing up and strictly observe traffic lights. Now Dorin Chirtoaca demands that culprit drivers be fired, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Municipal transportation chief Adrian Boldurescu said that last week alone 11 drivers were sacked after they drove through the red light, and the same penalty will be faced by the drivers who talk on their cell phones while driving. “It's very difficult to reach out to them. It's like talking to walls. Drivers ignore everything we are saying to them”, Boldurescu told Info-Prim Neo.
On the same subject, municipal police chief Silviu Musuc said the number of traffic violations committed by minibus drivers have been on the rise lately. The most frequent are stopping in authorized places, failure to buckle up and driving through the red light.
Last week, minibus drivers were responsible for 210 out of 2,191 traffic violations registered. In 22 cases minibus drivers were caught speeding and in 77 cases they were fined for carrying more passengers in the standing room than allowed.
