Chisinau municipality to offer aid to Japan

The Chisinau City Hall plans to offer 0.5 million to 1 million lei from its reserve fund in aid to the Japanese people, announced Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca on Monday, Info-Prim Neo reports. “This is not a very big bucket of money that can solve the problem of the disaster which hit Japan and change things considerably. This is first of all a signal of solidarity which we are morally obliged to make”, said Dorin Chirtoaca, recalling that the Japanese government has offered financing under many different projects to both the national government and Chisinau municipality on many previous occasions. Dorin Chirtoaca also encouraged all the municipal agencies and residents of the city to show sympathy and contribute. Dorin Chirtoaca also said that rhe natural disasters in Japan prompted the municipality to plan work sessions with the Emergencies Department where specialists could develop response strategies in the eventuality of natural disasters in Chisinau and Moldova. “ In recent years we have seen how different towns in many parts of the world were hit by disasters very hard. Just remember the floods that hit Moldova last summer”. Tens of thousands of people were feared dead after last week's devastating earthquake and tsunami in north-eastern Japan.
